Sleep

Since we’ve had children, our vacations have changed. So far they’ve meant less sleep instead of more, since our kids seem to wake up early (as in, before the sun) when they’re not at home. Our trips are always worth it, especially since they typically involve extra time with family, but we usually get home feeling totally exhausted.

This vacation at my mom’s though, has been a breakthrough. Our kids have slept! Every night! And they’ve been waking up late, after eight most mornings. A couple times it was actually closer to nine. 9am! Do you know how late that is? Adam and I haven’t slept this much since before we became parents. And since we get to sleep in, we can stay up a little later with my night owl mom and sisters.

Of course next year at this time if all goes well, we’ll have another baby, and extra coffee will once again have to make up for missing sleep. I’ll try not to complain about it because there’s no better reason to be tired than a new baby. And for the moment that level of sleep deprivation is still way off on the horizon. So today we’ll just be thankful for the slower pace of this vacation and all the time we’ve spent hanging out with friends and family, building sandcastles, jumping waves, playing at the park, walking Jack, watching sunsets, reading, and—yes, this definitely makes the highlight list—sleeping.
